The SFB has been developed over the past four years by a team led by innovative Nike Innovation Manager Tobie Hatfield, while honoring the service and inspiration of Nike's chief designer and co-founder, Major Bill Bowerman. Before Bowerman became the University of Oregon Track & Field Coach, he was a founding member of the 10th Mountain Division of the Army of the United States. Using lessons learned from both his service and his coaching years, the legacy Bowerman shoe design as a guide to Tobias and his team, a premium was placed on creating shoes that were lighter, which makes the use of natural foot motion, while decreasing the more traditionally given heavy overbuilding boots are stiffer, hotter, heavier and less breathable. From day one, Bowerman knew that there was "perhaps in the light." The SFB is undeniable proof.
